Not only does Molly Hillenbrand have her hands full with two adorable little girls, but this mother of two is the owner of two luxury baby and children stores, Luxaby Baby & Child, located in Chicago and in her hometown of Princeton, New Jersey. Not only is Molly able to do it all, but she manages to always look posh and polished along the way! We caught up with the gorgeous entrepreneur at her Oak Street store to discuss trends in children’s clothes and maternity wear, her amazing personal style, and where those topics overlap…
What is your typical day like as a mother and owner of Luxaby Baby? The funny thing is that there is no such thing as a typical day. Every day is its own adventure which is what I love! In Princeton, a day could include of:
- Getting my girls ready for school and then dropping them off
- Heading to the store in town to open and work for a few hours or see what new inventory has arrived
- Meetings with designers to pick out new clothing items for the next season
- Pick up my girls from school and heading to one of their many activities
- Head to the airport at night to fly to Chicago so I can be at the store on Oak Street the next day!
What is the most rewarding thing about seeing your brand on Chicago’s legendary Oak Street?
Oak Street is literally my dream location for the store. I feel so incredibly lucky that I was able to open when I did just as Oak Street is getting a huge resurgence and amazing new stores are opening. The average customer on Oak Street loves sophisticated style and appreciates good quality items. Our customers range from those who have lived in the area all their life to those who are visiting and staying in one of the fabulous hotels in the area.
What are three things in your closet you could never get rid of?
What’s one trend for Spring/Summer you’re most excited about?
The resurgence of the bright white in clothing is always crisp and classic and looks great when you have a summer tan!
What’s a trend you hope never comes back in style?
I am not a fan of the bright eyeshadow…make up should be subtle and enhancing, not overpowering.
What’s your favorite accessory to splurge on?
Who are some of your style icons and why?
Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Garner, Kate Middleton to name a few. I think they master the look of timeless elegance and classic feminine style with a modern twist.
What’s a major fashion risk that you’ve taken and learned to love?
I used to shy away from color and kept to neutrals…lately I’ve been wearing more bold colors – especially in the spring and summer! Bright and bold clothing looks great when you have a summer glow!
What’s your style advice for expectant mothers?
I always say to keep it timeless and classic. They should shop for the same style and quality that they are used to wearing when they are not pregnant. Maternity fashion has come so far these days that you are able to wear the clothing and feel just as beautiful as you do when you are not pregnant. Brands like Isabella Oliver cater to a woman who knows and appreciates good quality clothing but still wants to feel elegant and beautiful. It is what I wore during my pregnancies and the pieces are so beautifully made that I still keep some in my closet to wear now! They do not look ‘maternity’ but they fit amazingly both during and after.
What pieces should you save on and what should you splurge on during pregnancy?
I think that you should look at your maternity style the same way that you would look at your every day style. I splurged on one great outerwear piece – coat or wrap – and a great set of jeans or pants that you love to wear! Comfort is key and worth the extra costs if you feel good about yourself and are comfortable.
How do you like to dress your darling daughters? Is their individual style starting to emerge?
My two daughters have very different tastes and I love it! My oldest daughter dresses classic and feminine and loves twirly dresses, bright colors, ruffles and more. My younger daughter is more of a comfortable dresser – opting for pants over dresses and solids or stripes. I keep them both in mind when shopping for the clothing I carry in my store so I feel like I have something for everyone. They are definitely my inspirations!
What are the cornerstones of your beauty routine?
My beauty routine is pretty simple and easy as I am always on the go and don’t have the luxury of time when putting myself together. There are a few things though I can’t leave the house without doing (or shouldn’t at least!) Tinted moisturizer, mascara, soft pink blush and a neutral lip gloss are always on. When all else fails I find a good hair blowout can make all the difference!
How do you decide what to wear everyday?
I keep my style pretty basic and simple….my pieces are all pretty interchangeable and can often be layered and mixed and matched. If I’m not in a basic solid colored dress accessorized by a fun necklace or bracelet, you will find me in either jeans or solid pants with a fun blouse and a tailored jacket. I travel back and forth between Chicago and Princeton most weeks so my style has to be easy and on the go as I am usually hopping on a plane somewhere after a days work!
