When we moved into our current apartment last year I knew someday we’d have a baby and wanted our downtown apartment to feel really cool, adult and even rock and roll in the meantime. With that in mind, we decided it’d be a fun experiment to paint the entire common area black. The idea had been floating around in my mind for awhile, and I wasn’t ready to pitch it to any of my design clients without trying it first.
So we painted everything black and about a month later I found out I was pregnant and started craving a more family friendly aesthetic. Now, over a year later we’re making some changes! Here’s the thing about painting a room black… it all depends on one thing- natural light. Our living room is flooded with natural light, and we couldn’t love the black walls in there any more! We’re keeping that area painted black, and that’s another blog post for another day. However, our entryway doesn’t get nearly as much natural light, so we decided to change things up a bit…
That’s another “before” shot above. Black walls, black dresser, ornate gold and black mirror. The entryway “art” consisted of lacquered peace signs, and a banner purchased during my bachelorette party that reads Every 12 seconds someone remembers we’re all in this together. I wish I was joking. Here’s what things are looking like these days…
Everything, including the dresser, got a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore’s Decorators White.
For art, one of my favorite creative companies Minted stepped in to help. Minted is an online market place that connects you with independent artists from all over the world. They source their pieces through on-going art competitions. Pretty cool, right? I picked out this piece called Visionary 2 by Taleen Bedikian and it arrived framed, ready to hang. We couldn’t be happier with how it looks in the new entryway!
So much better!
