While Amelia’s not quite ready to dish on her recent wedding, Joanna Krupa is an open book about hers! The reality starlet’s fairytale wedding was unveiled on Bravo’s Real Housewives of Miami last month and Amelia had a chance to sit down with Joanna on the day it aired. We always expect a wild ride when we tune into the Real Housewives. However, when we sat down with Joanna, the sometimes saucy reality star, who says she doesn’t always like how she’s portrayed on TV, couldn’t stop talking about her charity work, spending time with family, her handsome husband, and using her money to save animals instead of shopping. Here’s what the former Chicago native had to say…
Congratulations on your recent wedding! It was stunning! What advice do you have for brides-to-be after your own wedding day?
Honestly, just enjoy it! For me, my friends kept telling me that I would have trouble enjoying the day, and that it goes by so fast… but for me I woke up so happy at the Park Hyatt, usually I’m a nervous wreck, if there’s a big event I’m so nervous, but I woke up so happy! As long as whoever you’re working with you trust, whether it’s a wedding planner or a florist, that’s the main thing. If you know that they get your vision and understand what you want you don’t have to worry as much. I didn’t even go look at the aisle over the pool the day of the wedding, all I did was wake up, I made sure my hair and makeup was ready to go for me, my bridesmaids and any family members that needed it, and then I was just full of joy! It goes by so fast, but for me it was the most amazing day of my life! I danced my butt off, we had to extend the bar, we went until 4:30 AM!
Is there anything you would do differently about your wedding? Or something you wish hadn’t aired on TV?
For me, if we had to redo anything I definitely wouldn’t plan my bachelorette party as close to my wedding rehearsal as we did, because when you’re in Vegas it takes a while to recover. We missed our flight, and flights to LA are every hour, but my wedding was in Carlsbad, so we missed our flight to San Diego and were screwed! We had to drive there, which was the worst 10 hours of my life. There was so much traffic, then we got stuck in the middle of the dessert. One of the girls had to pee, and another one wasn’t feeling well because she was hungover- it was a mess. I literally almost missed my own rehearsal dinner. So if I could change something, or have something not air on TV that would be it.
On the flip side, what didn’t we get to see on TV when the wedding aired? Is there something you wish Bravo had included?
I thought the wedding would be portrayed a lot longer! I had so many amazing friends and family that were there, the speeches from my friends who have known me for years, unlike the girls on the show that I have only known for 2 years, for people that have been in my life through thick and thin, some of whom have been in my life since high school they edited all that out. Also, what I’m so bummed about is that Roman and I wanted to entertain our guests, so for our first dance we did a goofy dance by Sir Mix A Lot to I Like Big Butts and they show part of the dance, but not set to the song! The song made the whole thing, it was hilarious! First we started with a normal dance, the Hallelujah, then the DJ stopped it and as soon as people heard Sir Mix A Lot they got the point. I’m going to YouTube it so people can watch it there.
What’s been the most surprising change in your life since you joined such a popular reality TV show?
I think the most surprising thing is that Roman and I are closer than ever! A lot of people say that reality television is the curse of relationships, but it saved ours. It made us communicate much more than we used to and I’m very grateful for that. Aside from everything else, I’m not really happy with how I was portrayed. I’m just like everybody else, I’m a normal human being, I say things that later I wake up regretting but it’s already on camera! So that’s really tough. It’s also really tough because once something like that happens you have to relive it in 3 months after you’re over it.
Who from the cast, if anyone, do you see yourself still being friends with in 15 years?
Karent Sierra from last season is a true friend of mine. I adore her, she’s one of the sweetest people in the whole world! Lea Black is someone I have a lot to learn from. She has her own charity and I can only dream that my charity (Angels for Animal Rights) could one day be as successful as hers. I definitely hope to learn from her.
Changing topics, we’re primarily a style blog, so I have to ask what designers you’re loving at the moment? Anywhere specific you’ve been shopping lately?
This is a Christina Karin shirt, with JBrand jeans and Giuseppe Zanotti booties. But you know what, I’m not a labels girl, I buy what I love. I think most of the time buying the really expensive stuff is a waste of money, because if I do a red carpet or go to an event I’m only going to wear it once or twice. I’d rather give back to my rescue mission, so a lot of times I go shopping and I’m like, Hmm, $800 for a pair of shoes, or how many animals would that save? So when I do buy designer it’s always at a discount or wholesale. I love going to Nordstrom because they have everything from the really affordable to designer items. I think it’s all about what it looks like on you, I never what to be a snob that only wears certain brands because life is too short and it’s not about that.
That’s awesome! Do you have any beauty secrets you’re willing to share?
Well, I’ve been developing a product for two years called Cellogica. It’s stem cell research with 5 ingredients, one of which is an apple that super anti-aging so I’m so excited to share that with my fans, and anyone who’s interested in skincare. I also believe you shouldn’t tan your face. I’m against tanning, but all about airbrush tanning. Always wear sunglasses during the day to protect your face. As a woman you can be in your 40′s, 50′s, 60′s and look amazing as long as you take care of yourself and you moisturize. That’s the most important thing! Your skin needs the extra moisture to protect itself from wrinkles.
What could Chicago ladies take away from the style in Miami?
You know I think Chicago ladies have it down pretty well! I don’t think they need to learn anything from Miami. Miami is very sexy, very colorful, it’s beyond, but because it’s so hot year round you can get away with it. Chicago is so classy that they shouldn’t take any tips from Miami.
What are your favorite things to do when you’re home in Chicago?
I take advantage of being home with my family! My aunt, my uncle, my cousins, my dad lives here, and friends from high school, so for me the most important thing is to spend time with them and get Polish home cooking. My Aunt loves to cook!
What’s next up for you?
Definitely Cellogica skincare, but I also recently shot for my 2014 calendar which benefits my animal rescue efforts. Right now, I’m really focused on animal rescue. I also have a necklace that benefits the charity. I’m also going to have swimwear coming out as well, but that will be a little bit later next year.
